At-Home Learning

May 7, 2021

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As per the premier’s announcement, all Alberta students from K to 12 shifted to at-home learning beginning today and are scheduled to return to school on Tuesday, May 25. We truly recognize the challenges that this brings for families and students. I hope the communication provided this week was helpful in clarifying initial questions, and that this note further helps.

I do want to take this opportunity to once again thank all of our families for their support over the course of the school year. It has been a trying school year as we have all navigated the COVID-19 pandemic. Your support in keeping your children home when ill has gone a long way to keeping us (mostly) healthy at Lakedell.

Learning began Friday with students working on assignments that have been provided by teachers while students were in school. Teachers are checking in with families Friday to ensure everyone is online and ‘ready to go.’ Staff will also use this day to prepare for the upcoming weeks of at-home learning with online lessons continuing Monday, May 10. Also, several students brought home school Chromebooks Thursday to assist with learning and communication.

During these two weeks, teachers will be guiding work in all four core subjects, with the emphasis on Language Arts and Math and a secondary focus on Science and Social Studies. Students brought home all of their supplies to ensure they have the tools needed to complete assignments. Most workbooks and other learning material were provided to guide their study and teachers will provide lessons and support online. Teachers will establish a schedule for group lessons and individual meets.  Your child’s Google Classroom will be the primary mode of instruction and interaction.

If you do not have access to the internet, many assignments will be able to be completed through the material sent home, and support can be acquired through phone calls between the teacher and the parent/student. Please contact your child’s teacher to plan for this option, or if you require assistance with Classroom.

Teachers will provide you with details of their learning activities and support plans. Please have students return completed paper assignments when they come back to school so they can be assessed by the teacher. We will also use these completed assignments for student attendance, in the same manner we did in January.

As previously communicated, Chromebooks may be borrowed from the school at the rate of one per family; however, as communicated this week, parents must request this loan. These Chromebooks will need to be returned when at-home learning ends and any damages to the devices will be the responsibility of the parent.

If you require a Chromebook loan, please complete the WRPS School Chromebook Loan Agreement ASAP. This form must be completed; if you do not need to borrow a Chromebook, please do not fill out the form.

Please be sure to communicate with us! If you or your child are requiring extra support, please let us know and we can arrange for some extra help with one of our staff members.

Thank you so much for your support and understanding. This is not an easy time for anyone and we are committed to moving through this challenge in the best way we can.

With great thanks, Ay-hay
Donald Teplyske,
Principal of Lakedell School
